Chinese New Year 2015: What Does the Year of the Sheep Have in Store?

Posted by Edna Zhou & Siting Ke on February 19, 2015

The coming Chinese New Year is the year of the sheep. The eighth of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs can also be referred to as the year of the goat or ram. According to the lunar calendar, this year will span from February 19, 2015 to February 7, 2016.

Zodiac History and Sheep Characteristics

In ancient China, the sheep represented impartiality. According to legend, a divine sheep called Xiezhi(獬豸)was able to identify wrongdoers and gore them. Consequently, judges in ancient China used Xiezhi as a symbol for upholding the spirit of the law.

Sheep are one of the animals people like most, due to their gentleness and calmness, and proximity to nice things. Since ancient times, their fleece has been used to make writing brushes and clothes to keep people warm. Additionally, mutton fat is highly desired as it is white, moist, and sometimes described as ‘suet jade’.

In Chinese, the character denoting “beauty” - 美 – uses the character of “sheep” (羊) in its upper half. People born under the year of the sheep are usually elegant, charming, artistic, gifted in nature, and the most creative. Their outstanding manners and charms always bring them good relationships with other people.

Positives:

What is the typical personality of those born under the sign of the sheep? Sheep are the most imaginative of all Chinese zodiac signs: they are talented craftsman, artists or writers; they can take up any career demanding artistic brilliance. Sheep people are gifted with a special insight to art and beauty, devout faith, and a deep fondness for quietness. They are tender, polite, filial, clever and kind in heart.

Sheep are hard to resist with their caring nature: they are romantic and sweet, and have the courage to express their love straightaway. They may have interests in strange topics and theories, but in daily life, sheep are wise and meticulous by nature, and able to find proper ways to handle any situation and can cope with any business problems. Sheep are also people watchers, and can spend much time looking at people from the sidelines.

Negatives:

Sheep may have a tendency to be idealistic and self-absorbed dreamers, while also timid and irresolute. They can be over-anxious worriers who are pessimistic, moody, indecisive, over-sensitive, weak-willed and puzzled about life. They are usually too shy to insist on a standoff in a conflict, and may pull back when faced with decision-making.

Sheep are uneasy, and feel the need to be loved and protected. Due to their indecisive and insecure nature, they like to study the mysterious and unknown and then resign themselves to fate instead of moving on. They may pay too much attention to their appearance and easily judge people by their looks.

Sheep love to be around acquaintances, so it might take a long time and a good deal of patience to become a close friend of someone born under this sign. In fact, the majority of people give up too soon instead of truly getting to know them. Consequently, sheep may have many social contacts, but few intimate friends.

Forecasts for 2015

What awaits you in the year of the sheep? According to Chinese astrology, the sheep is a ‘yin’ element, standing for peace, harmony and tranquility. That would be the theme of this year. 2015 is a year to conquer brute force with mental abilities, when good will prevail. For those who believe in goodness and act in a peaceful way, happiness will follow.

2015 is a year when the balance of economic development and social harmony is in peace. It does not eliminate doubts and anger, or desire for violence, but it cages these stimuli for conflicts.

At the family level, it is a good time to mend rifts and broken promises. Misunderstandings and complaints will be put on the shelf to heal with time.

People born under a year of the sheep will meet their sign in 2015. It is thought to be difficult to live through one’s zodiac year, so according to folk beliefs, these people should tie a red belt around their waist, wear red socks or something else red to survive a possibly challenging year.

Forecasts for other signs in 2015

Your birth year determines your sign. Based on Chinese astrology, you can find the fortunes of other zodiac signs in 2015:

Rat (2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960, 1948, 1936, 1924): Rats are aggressive and talkative in nature, which conflicts with the sheep’s nature, so 2015 might bring some ups and downs. In this sheep year, rats should try to better control their actions and words, and try to handle things with patience. Practicing yoga or meditation will help keep peace.

Ox (2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949, 1937, 1925): Oxen might have an average year. Oxen are also incompatible with sheep people, so in 2015 it is better to stay alert, analyze new proposals and understand all aspects of a situation cautiously. Uncommon opportunities are lying in the way for oxen so taking the right action will bring lots of wealth, although the benefits may not be sustainable for very long.

Tiger (2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938, 1926): The tiger is another hostile sign in the year of the sheep. Tigers will have to work extra hard to achieve their goals this year, as luck will not favor tigers so much. Keeping patient and calm will be the way to good results in 2015. Tigers may see some great commercial and academic opportunities, but should be prudent in starting new work or business.

Rabbit (2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, 1927): The Chinese horoscope brings good news for rabbits: they will enjoy a happy year in 2015. Horse (2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954, 1942, 1930): Although horses will witness some setbacks, their relatives and friends will be there to support them. 2015 will bring horses a job move to a better place or position, so they should work hard to obtain the benefits in their career. However, beware of feeling worn out from all this.

Rooster (2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957, 1945, 1933): 2015 could be an average year for roosters, unless they work hard to turn things around in their favor. Roosters will be out of luck in the first half of the year, but this will be remedied during the second half. So don’t be afraid to get up the courage to face even the worst situations with confidence and calmness.

It will be essential to understand situations and the opinions of others, and listen to others to achieve mutual agreements. Maintain good interpersonal relationships, because a dog’s career will be more dependent on their contacts in 2015.

Pig (2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959, 1947, 1935): Pigs will be provided with many opportunities this year. It is a favorable time for pigs to change jobs, and the prospect for promotion is much brighter. Analyze all options carefully, as the right decision in 2015 will bring further improvement.
