20th century writer Zhu Ziqing once composed a masterpiece titled Moonlight over the Lotus Pond: "Over the circuitous pond, what fills my eyes are lotus leaves covering each other. Leaves stand high above the water, as though the skirt of graceful dancing girl. Among the tiers upon tiers of leaves, intersperse some white blooms...like shining pearls, like stars in the sky, like beauties just after bathing."

Zhu Ziqing came to the lotus pond on a lonely evening and found the tranquil and fragrant pond brought him not only enjoyment, but also comforted his tired soul. For those who live far from mother nature, a pond of leafy fronds and white lotus blooms offers a welcome respite from urban life.

This piece uses an elaborate-style brushwork known as "Drunk Lotus" by the excellent traditional Chinese painter Zhang Daqian. Fine and closely woven, every stroke and stitch is distinct and discernible. The poem inscribed on the left narrates the scene: "The lotus leaves are like small boats and bloom like small windows, which trouble me to pick them up. Green stems tell a sad story that if I understood, would have me feel sorry for myself."
